The Obama Inauguration Timeline


Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th president of the United States on Tuesday.


But, are you one of those unfortunate people who have to work during the historic event? No problem! We have a handy timeline of events all mapped out, so you know when to sprint from your desk to the nearest TV.

10:30 a.m.: Call to order and welcoming remarks by Senator Dianne Feinstein


10:35 a.m.: Invocation by Rev. Rick Warren


10:38 a.m.: Aretha Franklin sings “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”


10:46 a.m.: Vice-President-elect Joseph Biden will be sworn in by Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens


10:48 a.m.: Music – “Air and Simple Gifts” by John Williams

10:57 a.m.: Music – “Ruffle and Flourishes,” “Hail to the Chief” and a 21-gun salute

10:58 a.m.: Senator Feinstein introduces the president

10:56 a.m.: President-elect Barack H. Obama will take the Oath of Office, administered by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. 12:01 p.m.: Obama’s inaugural address

11:21 p.m.: Poem by Elizabeth Alexander

11:27 p.m.: Benediction by Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery

11:36 p.m.: President and Mrs. Bush depart from the East plaza in helicopter

11:52 p.m.: President’s Room signing ceremony

1:32 p.m.: Review of the troops

1:36 p.m.: Inaugural parade
